Syllabi
Syllabi are available for the Ballroom, Latin, Salsa and Rueda classes (those marked with asterisks above).
Ballroom & Latin
Classes for everyone in Ballroom (Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Foxtrot and Viennese Waltz) and Latin (Cha Cha, Jive, Rumba, Samba and Paso Doble).
- Beginners – Very sociable classes, with basic steps taught at a pace which should be comfortable for everyone.
- Beginners(Bronze) - A faster paced beginners class. Suitable for people with some previous dance experience, or complete beginners attending regularly. These classes will cover basic steps for social and competitive dancing, and the material you will need if you want to take an IDTA medal in June at Bronze level.
- Improvers (Silver) - Suitable for people who have previously attended Beginners or Beginners Fast-Track classes, this class will also cover the steps needed to take a Silver medal.
- Intermediate (Gold) - If you're confident with the material from the Bronze/Silver class, then this one is for you. Again this will cover the relevant steps for the IDTA medal, but also essential knowledge for the social or competitive dancer, whether you choose to take an exam or not!
- Advanced – The most advanced class, which will cover choreography suitable for open events at university dancesport competitions.
NOTE: If you're not sure which class is best for you, feel free to try more than one level!
Salsa
Originating in Cuba, this is the most popular social partner dance in the world. OUDC teaches the basic Cuban style, upon which all of the many salsa styles are built.
- Absolute Beginners - for those who have limited or no dance training. We will practice timing, leading and following, and learn the basic Casino step, Mambo step, Rumba step, Enchufla, and Dile Que No.
- Fast-track Beginners - for those with some dance training. We will learn the fine points of leading and following, plus several of the common Cuban Style figures.
- Improvers - Aimed at last term's beginners. You must already know Enchufla, Dile Que No, Vacilala, and Sombrero BEFORE entering this class.
- Advanced - Sequences in this class are long and complicated, and will be built on the figures learned in the beginners' and improvers' classes.
- Rueda I - is suitable for people who are at Improvers level Salsa.
- Rueda II - is for Advanced dancers who have completed Beginners' Rueda
Argentine Tango
The dance of love! Learn a range of exciting moves in this passionate South American style.
Hip Hop
A fusion of dance moves and sequences including body conditioning and some basic breakdance routines – also a great way to keep fit!
Due to the strenuous nature of the dance, Hip Hop dancers must attend the earlier Dance Fitness session to warm up before the class. In the Hip Hop class we will be working toward a routine which can be used to represent Oxford University in the Offbeat category at the National Championships on Saturday 27th Feb. However, participation in this is optional and those who simply wish to learn the dance are also very welcome.
Social
The highlight of the dancing week! A chance to dance whatever you want with whomever you want. There is no teaching, only music (and sometimes drinks and nibbles!). All abilities welcome, especially beginners. No need to be shy, just go and ask anyone to dance!
